School Council

School Councils play a key role in Victorian government schools.

School Council is a group of dedicated people, working together with Department of Education and Training (DET) members to improve our school.

Participation as a school council member is a rewarding and challenging experience. Council members support the Principal to provide the best possible educational outcomes for students.

School Councils have three main responsibilities:

  • Finance – overseeing the development of the school’s annual budget and ensuring proper records are kept of the school’s financial operation
  • Strategic Planning – participating in the development and monitoring of the school strategic plan
  • Policy Development and Review – developing, reviewing and updating policies that reflect a school’s values and support the school’s broad direction outlined in its strategic plan.

Becoming involved with the College

Beechworth Secondary College values contact with parents. If you have specific skills that you are willing to share, please let the school know. You may be able to:

  • Help coach a sporting team or accompany a team on an interschool sports day
  • Assist with supervision on excursions and school camps
  • Help with the school canteen
  • Help with specific jobs that need to be completed from time to time
  • Nominate for School Council or become involved in the working parties that are set up for specific tasks.

Communication with Families

We value regular and consistent communication with our students and families.

The college keeps families up to date with notices, events, celebrations and opportunities through our fortnightly newsletter, and Compass Newsfeed.

We encourage all parents and caregivers to download the Compass App (available for Android and IOS devices) to easily receive regular updates. Alternatively Compass can be accessed from a web browser using your personal account details.

Teachers often communicate with families via email or phone call, so it is important that all family contact information is accurate and up to date. Please contact the office if you need to update personal details.

Fees

The Beechworth Secondary College School Council endeavours to keep fees and charges to a minimum whilst ensuring that sufficient financial resources are available to provide the support and facilities our students need.

There are three components to the fees structure:

  1. Essential Education Items
Subject Fee – Provision of class sets of text books, reference materials, curriculum requisites and general classroom requirements are charged for each of the Domains (subjects areas). Note: some elective subjects will attract extra charges.
Student Services Charge – Provides all students with locker hire and padlocks, school newsletters, maintenance and repairs to student equipment and grounds.
  2. Optional Extras
School magazine, optional camps & excursions
  3. Voluntary Financial Contribution
College Furniture & Fittings Fund – This is for future development of grounds, fittings and furniture.
Note: This will only be paid by one member of the family.

When Do I Pay?
All camps and excursions are to be paid prior to your child attending. An invoice for school fees will be sent to all parents at the beginning of Term 1. Payment options are available. Please contact the office if you wish to make payment arrangements.

Methods of Payment

  • BPAY – All families have an individual BPAY code. This is on the bottom of the Family Statement and allows easy payment methods directly to the account.
  • Credit Card – Payment via Credit Card is available by contacting the office
  • Cash/Cheque
  • EFT – Fund transfers can be made directly into the school account. It is important to advise payment details via email or contacting the school.
  • Centre Pay

Assistance With School Fees

Camps, Sports & Excursions Funding (CSEF) is funding made available to current eligible Commonwealth Pensioner Health Benefits Card, Commonwealth Health Care Card or Commonwealth Health Benefits Card. This is available to students under 16. Please contact the office for further details and application forms.
