Indonesian and French
Two languages other than English are offered—French and Indonesian. Students undertake a semester of each LOTE at both Year 7 and Year 8. At Year 9, students choose between Indonesian and French with a third option ‘Language and Culture’ offered after negotiation between student and teacher. T his structure is continued into Year 10 with a similar third option again offered . The learning outcomes focus on the four strands of communication—Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing.
Themes range from everyday interest s in the early years—self, family and home, school and leisure, food and shopping—to increasing cultural awareness in the later years involving a study of attitudes to modern life and each country’s individual heritage.
The course involves a wide range of activities which develop different forms of communication—the performance and creation of pair work; word games and quizzes; role plays; surveys and interviews; skits and plays; the writing of letters, journals and diaries; the reading of booklets, magazines and other primary documents; investigation and discussion of different ways of life and the appreciation and analysis of art, song, verse and film.
Excursions to relevant restaurants, businesses, gardens and the zoo have been designed to support and extend classroom teaching. Guest speakers and exchange students are also drawn upon to bring language to life. There are also opportunities for extra-curricular activities through the Albury LOTE concert and drama performances at feeder schools. A trip to New Caledonia or France is organised every two years , interspersed with a return trip to Australia from our sister school in New Caledonia. A trip to Indonesia or Malaysia in alternate years is also planned.
