The Arts

The Arts Overview Print
Our aim is to ensure that students learn both visually and verbally. Through scientific research, in the last few decades, it has become clear that the human brain is divided into separate halves. The left side, which contains the verbal, rational, logical, mathematical functions of our species has always been trained in school. Development of the spatial, relational, holistic right hemisphere has been largely neglected. Both modes are necessary for full human functioning and both are necessary for creative work of all kinds, whether writing or developing a new theory in physics, thinking laterally to solve problems or designing new products for the future.

Our society is changing rapidly. As a species we have so far depended on rational, left brain thinking. However the onslaught of profound change requires teaching techniques to develop and enhance student’s intuitive and creative powers. Arts learning is arranged in Year 7 and 8 as a term length rotation, through Art, Sculpture and Ceramics, Visual Communication and Music. This program is delivered in specialist rooms by expert staff. In Year 9 students elect to study two particular Arts offerings for one semester each. They select their studies from Art, Printmaking, Sculpture, Ceramics, Visual Communication and Drama.

Year 10 students enjoy a similar choice of semester length selections, with the additional offering of Australian Art History and Western Art History. Music is not available as an Arts study at Year 10, however instrumental music is offered to all students at B. S. C. Multi- media is offered as a V.E.T. subject to Year 10 and 11 students. The V.C.E. Arts offerings include Art, Studio Art, Visual Communication and Drama.

Our College has a very proud tradition of excellence in the Visual and Performing Arts. As the school year draws to a close we showcase the achievements of our students in the Combined Schools Exhibition. We aim to hang at least one artwork from each student in this show, which we share with all our ‘feeder schools’ and kindergartens. This is an inspirational exhibition for the community and our students, as we view the mature folios of the V.C.E. students alongside the work of all other students from schools in the Beechworth area. As an annual activity, the influence of the dedicated, senior student is positive and enhances the strength of the arts in our community. The College students have access to Life Drawing classes, held on Monday evenings at the Arts Precinct, LaTrobe University, Beechworth. The Beechworth Arts Council subsidizes the cost of these classes, for which we are very grateful.
